Good old deep fried Dim Sim reinvented !
Well after a rather busy and stressful move, Opti Cook is back in the kitchen ! I’ve been trying this one for a while now, finally got a good combo of filling and cooking time. I’ve mixed up various recipes for the old fashioned “Aussie” Dim sim. This is no gourmet delight, but for those who like the Fish n Chip shop deep fried variety … Give this a go ! Fairly quick, done and dusted in 40 minutes, including cooking time. If you can’t be bothered with the cabbage wrapping step, the filling is nice with cauliflower rice or stir fried vegetables.

Traditional "Aussie" dim sims, like the deep fried ones from the local Fish n Chip shop, no gourmet fare, but tasty and fairly quick to make.

Total Time

Ingredients
- 1 brown onion, chopped
- 1 tsp garlic, crushed
- 1 tsp ginger, crushed
- 2 tsp Chinese Five Spice mix
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (whatever you have), chopped (not cabbage)
- 1 cup of cauliflower florets, chopped
- Half a green cabbage or equivalent
- 4 tbs low salt soy sauce
- 2 tbs rice wine vinegar
- 1/2 tsp sesame oil
- generous pinch black pepper
- 1 tsp chilli powder or cayenne pepper (optional)
- Olive oil spray
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°C.
- Remove the core of cabbage, then carefully separate the leaves (as pictured). Place on a plate with paper towel on it to absorb the moisture. Cook in microwave for 4 minutes. Leave to cool. Trim the spine and any thick white parts away, leaving flat soft leaves for rolling. It doesn't matter if they are of different sizes and shapes. Stack and set aside.
- In a food processor, blitz the onion, garlic, ginger, mixed vegetables, cauliflower. Heat a fry pan over medium heat. Tip the mixture in and cook stirring, adding the five spice powder a few minutes in. Cook for 10 minutes until it starts to wilt down. Add the soy sauce and vinegar. Leave to cook down for a further 5 minutes until moisture has been absorbed. Add the sesame oil and black pepper (and chilli if using). Stir and let cool slightly.
- On a chopping board, add approx. tbs mixture in the end of a cabbage leave. Roll. Cut in half width wise to make two small rolls (as pictured). Once all done, place on oven tray and spray with olive oil.
- Cook for 10 minutes, then turn, and cook for a further 10 minutes.
- Remove and serve immediately drizzled with soy sauce.
Notes
- You can use any other Asian inspired sauce with them, such as soy, ginger, garlic, Sweet Chilli, and rice wine vinegar with sliced chilli.
- They do go soggy and lose their crunch if you leave them to cool or refrigerate.
- Not suitable for freezing.
- Great over cauliflower fried rice.
- Re: serving size - I would say this serves 5-6 people on top of rice, it makes 30 little dim sims.
- Nutritional Panel notes
- Please note this is in the American version. Please minus the fibre from the carb. Also, if sauces are used, the cal and carb content will be higher, as it cannot interpret low cal sauces. I am attempting to get this rectified through Recipe Card.

So these were tasty well done! But I have a complaint about the heading.. it seems quite racist, implying dim sims are made with cats?

Hi Shanni,
I’m sorry if you are offended by the title,
Please note that these are a take on the Aussie invented Dim Sims not Dim Sum, which are Chinese in origin. I reference this in the text of the blog entry. I’m specifically referring to the Australian folklore about fish & chip shops making these from a mix of dodgy meat including the feline variety ! (Which is of course untrue !)

Why thank you Miss LJSB ! Glad you enjoyed them, I made a batch a little while ago and they were a bit chewy, I think I may not have followed my own directions and overcooked them ! Cheers, Joni
